Pause Collection

The Pause collection uses monotype printing to create unique images with no repeatable template. Black underglaze is drawn through screens onto a gel plate and then transferred to the ceramic surface. A somewhat different mark is created with each print, according to the curve of the surface and how the fragments of image overlay each other.

Nyx collection

The Nyx collection uses a single silk screen with connecting lines that create a constellation-like design. The night sky pattern emerged while listening to Stephen Fry's Mythos audio book so it seemed fitting to name the collection Nyx after the primordial god of night.

The Horae collection features images of the sun and constellations. The sun represents the Greek god Helios, who drove the sun chariot across the sky. The constellations represent Nyx, the goddess personification of night who travels in a dark chariot. Depicting the sun and night together, this collection is called Horae after the goddesses who harness and unyoke the horses to their chariots.

The monotype process

The intricate surface decoration is achieved with layers of underglaze pattern inked onto custom made screens over a gel plate. Transferring the monotype print onto the ceramic surface is either done by pressing the vase onto the gel plate or holding the gel plate up to the vase. When the decoration is complete, the pieces are fired to 1200°c to fuse the underglaze image to the clay.

The short videos below help to give an insight into the monotype printing process.
